The journal records an 1850-52 journey from New Bedford to China by way of Cape Horn, Sandwich Islands, Bering Straits, and Hong Kong. It records the crew of the ship St. George, the commander Capt. Hawes, and the number of whales caught and missed. It describes a stay in Whampou (Huang-pu), China and the voyage home to New York by way of Cape of Good Hope on the Annie Bucknam commanded by Capt. Barber and carrying tea. A crew list is included and letters to his parents and Charles Harrison.
